Small Business Website Hosting
We offer our clients affordable and reliable website hosting. On top of that we offer hosting that is geo-targeted to their location. We currently have 3 web servers to cover all of North America. Two are located in the US for our American clients and one server is located in Canada for our Canadian clients.
Server Location Matters for Local Websites
The server that is hosting your website does not need to be located where you are, but is should at the very least be in your country, and maybe on your side of the continent.
The internet is a completely world wide medium and from that perspective it does not matter where your website is hosted. It could be located in Denmark, the Philippines, the good ol' US of A, or just about anywhere and your site will load up when a user visits it. But it will load faster if the server is closer. And visitors may even be able to find your site easier if the server is located in your country.
Geo-Location and Search Engines
Every web server, just like every web user, has an IP address (internet protocol). IP addresses are issued out by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and tied to that data is a location. Some search engines, particularly Google, use this information in its search ranking algorithm.
Google will look at the IP address of a user conducting a search. It will then use that information to skew it's search results, to the benefit of the searcher, for websites located in their country.
Yahoo, on the other hand, takes the stance that the web has no borders and web hosting is readily available at competitive prices across the globe. They also happen to be in the business of selling web hosting space and have servers located around the world. So they know that a website whose business activities are targeting, lets say, downtown Los Angeles could easily be sitting on a server in India while the webmaster running the site may be located in Paris, France. Trust us, that's common. Thus Yahoo does not currently use IP location as a ranking factor in its search algorithm.
So who's view is right? Google or Yahoo? Well they both are, ultimately. But armed with that knowledge we suggest following Google's lead. They do, after all, send about 80% of all search traffic so catering to their practices is in your businesses best interest. And having the server closer to your users will enhance the users experience when your pages load a fraction of a second faster.
